Root Chakra Yin Yoga

Why I love Yin Yoga for the Root Chakra

I love root chakra yin yoga. It’s the perfect way to slow down, get a deep stretch, and release tension from your body. If you’re new to this style of yoga, it’s a passive practice where you hold poses for about three to five minutes at a time. You let go of any effort and surrender into each pose so that the stretch goes deep into your body—specifically the connective tissue or fascia around your muscles and joints.

In this 45-minute root chakra yin yoga flow focused on the muladhara chakra, we’ll move through a sequence to help you feel more connected to this energetic center. The root chakra is associated with feeling grounded in your own power, safe in your surroundings, and secure in life itself because all of those feelings are what allow us to feel free enough to follow our dreams and live the lives we want.

Props for Yin Yoga

You do not need to have props, but I love them, and they certainly are a great way to treat yourself in your yoga practice.

This is the bolster that I use in all of my online yoga classes. These are the same exact bolsters that I used in my yoga studios. You can check out my bolster here.

What Does Root Chakra Yin Yoga do for You?

The Muladhara Chakra controls grounding, safety, security, home, family, and environment. If we aren’t feeling in control of our life, the root chakra is the area we are going to want to focus on. That is why root chakra yin yoga is so powerful.

How to Start a Yin Yoga Class for the Muladhara Chakra

Sit in a comfortable position. This can be either cross-legged, or seated in a chair with your back straight and your hands on your knees. If you choose to sit on the floor for your root chakra yin yoga, make sure that you have enough space around you so that there’s no danger of hitting anything if you lean forward. Close your eyes and let go of any other thoughts that may still be lingering in your mind by taking slow breaths and focusing on the sound of the breath entering and leaving through the nose.

How to Build Awareness in a Root Chakra Yin Yoga Class

Take a few moments to feel the space around you. Notice the tactile sensations on your skin, the temperature of the air, sounds around you and smells in the room. Notice how much light there is or if it’s dimly lit or completely dark.

Breathing and Grounding Yoga

Now that you’ve had a chance to relax your body, it’s time to focus on your breath. The breath is a powerful tool for calming the mind and preparing yourself for meditation. As you breathe in, imagine a stream of healing energy flowing through your body. As you exhale, let go of whatever tension or anxiety may be lingering inside of you.

When practicing yoga, it’s important to pay attention to what feels right for your body at any given moment during class. If there are certain poses that feel uncomfortable or painful as they stretch different muscles groups (for example: if moving into a forward fold creates a sharp pain in your back), take note! Don’t force yourself into these positions if they cause pain—instead opt for something else that will still benefit from stretching those muscles but won’t cause any discomfort or injury along the way!

How to Observe the Breath in Root Chakra Yin Yoga

  • Observe your breath without controlling it.
  • Listen to your breath.
  • Feel the sensation of your breath; notice the rise and fall of your belly, feel air entering and leaving your nostrils.
  • Focus on these sensations. Take as much time as you need to fully notice them before moving on!

Root Chakra Yoga and Finding the Grounding Yoga Within

  • Close your eyes and feel the energy inside them.
  • Feel the space inside the eye sockets, as if you are looking at a white screen or piece of paper behind them.
  • Feel how heavy your eyes are to hold up or lower from their current position.
  • Feel the energy inside your eyes, like waterfalls or waves of fluid flowing through them.
  • Go deeper into an energetic space behind your closed eyelids.

Visualizing the Root Chakra Yoga

In root chakra yin yoga, you’ll want to bring your awareness to your lower belly. Visualize the color red and a lotus flower with four petals in your lower abdomen. Feel the element earth around you, grounding you to the earth as you inhale slowly through the nose, on an exhale press with both hands into your lower belly, massaging it gently.

Take one more deep inhale through the nose and exhale slowly with the mouth open; let it all out. Take a few moments to observe how you feel, then slowly come out of your meditation. You’ll feel more grounded and centered after meditating on muladhara chakra!

Conclusion to the Muladhara Yin Yoga Class

I hope this guide has given you a new way of thinking about the root chakra yin yoga. This practice represents just one of the many ways to work with your energy centers (chakras), but I find that it’s often overlooked by other types of yoga. If you are feeling unbalanced today and need a gentle yet powerful way to reconnect with yourself, give this sequence a try! What have you got to lose?
